Social networking apps provide a place for kids to present themselves, seek approval and describe their interests. One of the defining features of most social networking pages is the visual and audio clutter; these sites often look like over-decorated high school yearbooks or scrapbooks. Teens use these pages as a place to feature everything in their heads and hearts that they want people to know. The central feature of these sites is the ability to connect with people and share information.  It is important for parents to monitor and implement safety rules.  Below are some tips:

1. Establish ongoing dialogue and keep lines of communication open.
2. Supervise use of all internet related devices.
3. Regularly check social networking sites to see what information your child is posting.
4. Teach your child how to protect their personal information.
5. Instruct your child to avoid meeting face to face with someone they only know online.
6. Teach your child how to respond to cyberbullies.
7. Establish an agreement with your child.
8. Set time limits
9. Utilize parental control setting when available.
